The Mary Celeste
The Mary Celeste (often misreported as Marie Celeste), also known as the Ghost Ship, was an American registered two-mastered sailing vessel which left New York City for Genoa on November 7, 1872, but never arrived. A month passed by before the ship was found, and on December 5, 1872, 10 days after the last entry log, the ship was discovered.
The Mary Celeste was discovered in the Atlantic ocean, 400 miles east of the Azores Islands, but finding the ship only led to more questions and ultimately became one of the greatest mysteries of our time.
Upon finding the ship, it was clear Captain Benjamin Briggs, his family and crew were not on board. The ship didn’t appear to resemble any structural damage, no leaks, and there was no blood or bodies. The ship was stocked up with six months worth of food, supplies, and alcohol. There was also a life boat missing.
Nov 1872, when the Mary Celeste set sail, witnessed the worst weather since records began, even still, experts say an experience captain would not have abandoned their ship unless they were confident it was going down, and judging by the structural condition of the ship, that was not the case. The ship’s captain was said to be navigating accurately on the voyage, but then deviated off their route and ended up going north.
Experts have ruled out pirates, as there was far too much alcohol and supplies left on board and pirates would have taken everything. Weather conditions were pretty much ruled out because of the ship’s overall good condition so there would be no reason for the crew to board a life boat.
Some say the crew drank alcohol and became violent, ultimately committing murder and throwing crew overboard before disappearing themselves. Some claim it was pirates, despite all the food and supplies being untouched, some say weather, and other even say aliens were responsible for the mystery of the Mary Celeste.
The ship has been referred to as “The Ghost Ship” and there has also been a move loosely based on the mystery called Ghost Ship. Mainly because the majority of people seem to believe there was a supernatural or paranormal explanation to the baffling mystery behind the crew’s disappearance. It would definitely be an eerie and unsettling experience to find a large ship in the middle of the Atlantic ocean with no crew aboard and no trace of them.
It is said the crew’s spirits cursed the ship and the mystery behind the disappearing crew is paranormal. Maybe the crew were mentally overpowered by spirits and committed suicide out at sea. The truth is, no theories have been proven correct and they may never be unless there is evidence found on the bottom of the ocean of something else arises from the case.
