The Knights Templar were a Christian military order, The Order of the Poor Fellow Soldiers of Christ and of the Temple of Solomon, formed in 1119 AD to protect Christian pilgrims on their crusades to the Middle East.

Their treasure was accumulated from years of donations from patrons which ultimately made them the most fierce and powerful military order in Europe.  They were famous in Medieval times (The Middle Ages), but the Order was broken up and heads of state were instructed to arrest all Templars and seize their possessions.

Many Knights were arrested and had their treasure and other possessions seized, but many also escaped in an attempt to hide their treasures.  At least several thousand men, as well as a fleet of ships, vanished during the disbandment in the year 1307.  The quick end of the once powerful organization led to many stories and legends about them which developed over the following centuries.
