Pichushkin commit his first murder in 1992, around the same time of the trial of infamous Rostov Ripper, Andrei Chikatilo.
His first murder was on July 27, 1992, when he took the life of Mikhail Odichuk, an old class mate of his. Pichushkin had convinced Odichuk to accompany him in killing someone, but due to Odichuk’s uncertainly about murdering someone, Pichushkin killed him instead.
The murder of his classmate was the start of Pichushkin’s 14 year killing spree. He started to target homeless elderly men by luring them into a false sense of security and offering them a bottle of vodka to join him in a drink.
Many of them were thrown down sewers in the park, but eventually he began more torturous methods of killing his victims because he ”wanted more emotion”, as he said.
He would increase his target victims to young men, women, and children, attacking them from behind with repeated blows to the head with a hammer, which because his signature technique.
For some victims, he even jammed a vodka bottle into the gaping holes in their head, leaving their bodies where he killed them with very little care or concern. Newspapers nicknamed him the “Bittsevsky Maniac” as well as “The Bittsa Beast.”
His final murder was in June 2006 when he took the life of 36-year-old Marina Moskalyova. Her body was found in Bitsa Park, but police discovered a metro ticket in her possession, prompting them to view surveillance footage where they saw her with Pichushkin shortly before her death:
He was swiftly arrested and later charged with 49 murders and 3 attempted murders. He asked the judge to add an additional 11 murders to his total, bringing the death toll to 60.
He was sentenced to life in prison with the first 15 years to be spent in solitary confinement which he is currently serving at the Arctic penal colony “Polar Owl”.
