Andrew Cunanan, the man who killed Versace
Serial killer Andrew Phillip Cunanan was born on August 31, 1969. Among others, one of his victims was Italian fashion designer, Gianni Versace.
Cunanan was half Filipino, born in California and was the youngest to his three siblings. During his schooling years, he was identified as homosexual and used to change his appearance based on his mood. Though homosexuality is far more common and accepted in the Philippines, as is appearance changes with transexuals, there’s no indication his gay preference was influenced by his culture or father.
His full Filipino father abandoned the family in 1987. He fled back home to the Philippines to evade being arrested for embezzlement. When his mother, who was very religious, discovered his sexuality, an argument broke out. Cunanan threw her against a wall hard enough to dislocate her shoulder.
After moving to Minneapolis, Andrew Cunanan’s murder spree began. His first victim, Jeffrey Trials, was killed on April 27, 1997, a close friend of Cunanan. After an argument at Trials’ apartment, Cunanan beat him to death with a hammer. He then rolled his body up in a rug and stuffed it behind a sofa.
Andrew Cunanan murdered three more people over the next two weeks, promoting himself from a murderer to a serial killer. Cunanan became the closest thing to a true Filipino serial killer as there aren’t any in the Philippines.
The victims were David Madson who was shot to death, and William Reese who was shot and killed by Cunanan on May 9th, 1997.
Lee Miglin was another victim of Cunanan, but his death was far more violent. Cunanan bound Miglin’s hands, feet and head with duct tape and torture him. The 72-year-old real estate agent was stabbed more than twenty times before having his throat slit with a hacksaw at the hands of Andrew Cunanan. Miglin’s family claim it was random and Wikipedia haven’t shared any connection, it’s actually believed that there was motive behind the killing as Miglin was some form a ‘sugar daddy’ to Cunanan.
The final murder of the brutal serial killer was someone nearly everyone knows… World-famous fashion designer, Gianni Versace.
Making his way down to South Florida, Cunanan targeted his final victim. On the morning of July 15, 1997, Cunanan murdered 50-year-old Gianni Versace on the front steps of his mansion, Casa Casuarina (the Versace mansion) in Miami, Florida.
Just 8 days after the murder of Gianni Versace, Cunanan took the same .40-caliber Taurus PT100 semi-automatic pistol he used to kill Madson, Reese, and Versace and shot himself in the head. His body was discovered by police after a caretaker heard the gunshot and alerted authorities.who rushed to the luxury yacht he committed suicide on.
Over twenty years later and the true motives for killing Gianni Versace are still unknown. It may have been linked to a jealousy streak of gay lovers that Cunanan had, one that may have given him HIV. Maybe Versace crossed paths with said lover and cursed himself to a premature death at the hands of the Filipino serial killer.
There’s a phenomenal show called The Assassination of Gianni Versace which portrays Cunanan and his life in elicit details. The show is currently available on Netflix as of June 2020 and stars Ricky Martin and Penélope Cruz with the lead role of Cunanan being played by Darren Criss.
