The Highway of Tears is the name given to a 725km (450 mile) stretch of Highway 16 in Canada where many people have vanished and been murdered, but the killer or killers’ true identity has never been discovered, making it one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of all time.
There have been at least 71 people that have disappeared or been murdered on the Highway of Tears and police have spent the last half a century trying to find the person or persons responsible, but investigations have turned up nothing.
The reason for the deaths is unknown, but there has been a long list of theories. The most likely reason is probably a serial killer taking advantage of the secluded and isolated areas where hitchhikers wander to try and get someone to pick them up for long-distance travel to see their families.
Some of the victims have been found in shallow graves on or close to Highway 16, but all were either killed or abducted from the remote country road.
The locals started campaigns that warned of a killer on the loose and a sign was constructed to warn people, primarily females, not to hitchhike because there was a killer on the loose and to warn people of the unsolved murders of the Highway of Tears.
There have been many books, shows and other material inspired by the story as it is still one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of all time.
The truth is that the Highway of Tears murders and disappearances may never ben sold, but that doesn’t stop people conducting exhausting investigations into the many cases.
Many American serial killers, such as Ted Bundy, the man that murdered Versace, and the unidentified killer who was responsible for the Keddie Murders, have either been caught for their killing sprees or didn’t murder many people, but there has never been anything of this scale without a single suspect.
