With the family and friends expecting to enjoy some getaway time, Sheila spent the night at her friends while the rest of them stayed in Cabin 28.
Around 7:45 a.m. the following morning, Sheila returned to find her mother, her brother John, and his friend, Dana, completely brutalized with blood splattered all over the walls and ceiling.
Glenna’s two other sons, Greg and Rick, and their friend Justin, were unharmed while Tina was established as missing.
Sheila immediately ran back to her friend’s house after seeing a heart-stopping massacre. Her friend’s father got the three boys out the cabin through their bedroom window so they didn’t have the chance to witness the blood-splatter room with their family’s bodies.
Police arrived on the scene shortly after to investigate the chaos that had taken place.
Glenna, John and Dana had all been repeatedly stabbed. Glenna was bludgeoned with a Powerline 880 rifle, then her throat cut, along with her son’s. Dana was brutally beaten with something else.
The cabin didn’t show any signs of robbery for a motive, nor was there any indication of forced entry, suggesting this was a personal crime and the victim’s let their attackers in.
Tina remained listed as a missing person until April 1984, when her skull and several other of her bones were recovered at Camp Eighteen, California in Butte County.
The Keddie murders have warranted national media attention, including coverage in People magazine, an Investigation Discovery documentary series, and an independent 2008 feature documentary titled Cabin 28. The 2008 horror film The Strangers is theorized to have been inspired by the Keddie murders.
In 2016, a hammer was found in a pond and with ground-breaking DNA technology, authorities may one day identify the who murdered the fourth innocent victims, but as of now, the killer(s) remain a complete mystery.
