First Contact Protocol For Extra-terrestrial Intelligence
With the discovery of intelligent life beyond Earth getting closer and closer, we MUST implement a global agreeance of a first contact protocol.
With the exponential growth of technology, specifically in space, such as telescopes, radio towers, probes and rockets, the potential discovery of intelligent life is getting closer and closer, but we’re not even close to being ready.
The world governments and the United Nations must dedicate some time to developing a global first contact protocol for when we discover intelligent life beyond Earth.
By not doing this, we are showing that we are far from ready to discover intelligent extra-terrestrial life. This must change because we are launching rockets into space, probe throughout our solar system with the exact location of Earth, but we don’t even know what to do when we discover extra-terrestrial intelligence.
The closest thing we have is SETI’s Declaration of Principles Concerning Activities Following the Detection of Extraterrestrial Intelligence, but even this does not cover what we will do when we make first contact with extra-terrestrial intelligence.
If we are being observed by super-intelligent aliens, putting a global protocol in place would show them we are one step closer to being ready for contact.
There is already enough concern for the human condition when we make the discovery that we are not alone, so having a protocol in place seems logical and should have been done by now.
The public announcement that we have made the discovery of life beyond Earth will change the human condition in a way we can’t foresee, predict or imagine. Though it will likely not result in riots or psychological damage, humans will rethink everything about their existence and this will change people’s mindsets.
There is no way to imagine how we will change our thinking, but we need to cover as many bases as possible, because if contact is made and the news breaks, there simply must be a first contact protocol in place to prevent mass panic.
Human beings will already struggle to accept whether or not there is a threat, but having a first contact protocol will at least provide a psychological sense of security that we have plans in place for contact with intelligent life beyond Earth.
