When the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum opened, it stretched half a kilometer from one end to the other. It held a total of 1,200 patients when full, a perfect balance of men and women.

Over 3,000 patients died within its walls during its 128 year operation period. Its doors closed in 1995, later operating as a campus of La Trobe University.

The Ghost Tours that run at Beechworth Lunatic Asylum have become the most popular ghost tours on the mainland of Australia.

The only ghost tours to attract more visitors are those in Port Arthur, Tasmania. Ghost tours of Beechworth Asylum are offered nightly and there are up to twelve tours conducted in a single evening.

The most common ghost to be seen in the lunatic asylum is that of Matron Sharpe, a nurse who was said to be uncharacteristically kind to the patients for that era. Nurses reported seeing Matron’s apparition sat next to patients who were due to have electroshock treatment.  More recently, she has been seen in the dormitory area which is now a part of La Trobe University’s computer room.

That area is the location people have reported tugging at their clothing as well as being poked in the ribs.

Other ghosts have been seen including that of a young girl in the Grevillea Wing.

The Beechworth Lunatic Asylum has a grizzly history, administering electroshock treatments, causing ligaments to snap, bones to break, and teeth to shatter. All patients feared the Grevillea Wing the most. That was were the electroshock treatment took place and also where straight jackets and shackles were commonly used. The Grevillea Wing is also where a paranormal enthusiast captured a picture of the young girl’s ghost that is present in the area.
