With nearly 900 years of supernatural history, the Ancient Ram Inn has become of the most haunted places in the world. It’s located at 8 Potters Pond in Wotton-under-Edge, about 100 miles west of London.
The Ancient Ram Inn was originally built in 1145, directly on top of an ancient pagan burial ground. If that’s not reason enough to be haunted, the building also sits directly over the intersection of two Ley lines, which are said to be a point of high spiritual energy.
Following all that, it served as a priest’s house and then a brewery, but in 1968 it poured its last pint. It was purchased by the late John Humphries shortly after and acted as a bed & breakfast while he fought to save the building until his death in 2017.
Unlike the majority of haunted places in England and other countries, the ghosts of the Ancient Ram Inn are far more sinister and malicious than your typical spooky shadow.
There are many ghosts that people claim to have identified and traced back at the Ancient Ram Inn, most of which are bone-chilling.
The owner himself reported that on his first night staying there he was dragged out his bed and across the room by an unseen force, though this may have been purely for publicity.
One of the best known ghosts of the Ancient Ram Inn is a witch who was burned at the stake in the 1500s. She took refuge in the house before she was captured and killed. The room where she is most frequently spotted is now called ‘The Witch’s Room’, said to be haunted by her ghost.
Another room in the building, which is said to be haunted by a monk, was given the name ‘The Bishop’s Room’. Guest who stayed at the Inn declined the offer to stay in the Bishop’s room after other guests who had stayed in there were terrified enough to flee the property in the middle of the night, literally screaming as they scarpered up the street.
Another came from a plumber who was doing work at the Inn. He reported a centurion on horseback that passed straight through a solid wall in front of him. Others have claimed that a succubus creeping into visitor’s beds while they sleep.
John Humphries kept the Ancient Ram Inn as a haunted bed & breakfast, but some of the stories may have been fabricated, as with the Enfield Poltergeist case. However, he did make some very eerie discoveries.
Humphries found evidence of devil worship and ritual sacrifice hidden on the grounds. He also found the skeletal remains of children under the stairs, some with broken daggers that had been thrust into their chests.
Who owns the Ancient Ram Inn now? Since John Humphries’ death in 2017, it was taken over by his wife, Caroline Humphries. In 2019, she shared her future plans for the building with The Wotton Times and invited archaeologists to investigate there.
The Ancient Ram Inn has built up such a reputation, a large majority of the locals won’t even walk past the property after dark and the Inn is considered one of Britain’s most haunted places. Would you visit the Ancient Ram Inn?
