Beechworth Lunatic Asylum in Beechworth, Victoria, is the most haunted place in Australia. Operating from 1867-1995, it was built on Beechworth hill with the belief that the altitude would rid patients of their illness, but very few ever made it out alive.
Originally known as the Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum, this isolated building sits on 106 hectares of farmland, designed to be completely self-sufficient with a pig farm, fields, stable and barn.
Beechworth saw thousands of patients over the years, but when they died, they didn’t really leave. Their troubled ghosts still haunt the building today.
During one session, the entire patient population were subjected to electric shock treatment so it’s not surprising that most of the paranormal activity happens in the rooms were these experiments occurred.
Is it any wonder Beechworth has earned the title of Australia’s most haunted location?
Over the years, the ghost stories have poured in and visitors have reported many different experiences from footsteps creeping up behind them when no one is there to doors slamming and shadowed figures appearing in various parts of the asylum.
People have also reported the stench of rotting flesh. This actually has some substance to it because one patient was found dead in a tree. He had been there so long that his leg had fallen off and was discovered by a dog.
Other reports are rooms turning ice cold. The ghost of a man in the gardens. Among other things.
It’s possible to visit if you’re brave enough. The Australian ”Asylum Ghost Tours” offers such a service. You can experience the ghost tour, the paranormal tour, a historic tour and special events, including spending the night at Beechworth Lunatic Asylum!
