The Ghosts of the haunted Yuma prison in Arizona has become a very popular destination for ghost hunters and is considered Arizona’s most haunted place.
The prison initially opened on July 1, 1876 and operated for 33 years until it shut down on September 15, 1909. Some sources claim that the prison shut down due to overcrowding, and although that’s half accurate, the prisoners were actually moved to the newly constructed Arizona State Prison which was located in Florence, Arizona.
Though Yuma prison now stands as a historic museum, but the walls hold something as equally as terrifying as the criminals that were housed there over a century ago.
The haunted Yuma prison has become known as such because of the strange and repetitive reports of paranormal activity that occurs there and was competing for the most haunted place in America at one point. With other contenders such as Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Eastern State Penitentiary and Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, it’s hard to rank number one, but the haunted Yuma prison is definitely Arizona’s top paranormal location.
The spirits of the prisoner that died on death row are said to wander the historic halls of this desert complex. There have also been many reports of a moaning woman wandering the banks of the Colorado River, said to be looking for her daughter that drowned.
During operations, there were 29 female inmates there, so the ghostly sightings at the haunted prison have a mix of both male and female apparitions.
One ghost that is said to haunt the prison is that of a young girl who is said to physically interact with visitors, pinching guests before running away. In spite of all this, many people are intrigued by the prison and some even want to experience an overnight stay as it is said that after dark is the most active time for paranormal occurrences.
Tina Clark, the City of Yuma’s Historian and the haunted Yuma prison’s doyenne said: “We have non-profit organizations beg us to let them raffle off an overnight stay here in the prison, but we don’t think that’s a very good idea.”
