The most haunted place in the Philippines is widely regarded as Fort Santiago. A defense fortress built in 1593 by Spanish navigator and governor Miguel López de Legazpi for the new established city of Manila.
Located in Intramuros, Fort Santiago is considered one of the most important historical sites in the capital and saw national hero, José Rizal, spend his final days there before his execution by firing squad in 1896. He is one of the ghost said to haunt the grounds today with footsteps heard of him walking his route to the execution chamber.
During the battle of Manila, the U.S army advanced into the capital in order to drive Japan out. Civilians were violently murdered with their bodies being totally mutilated, over 400 women and young girls were raped, and massacres in schools and hospitals were also carried out by the frustrated Japanese. The battle brought the city to rubble.
It’s difficult to know exactly how many people died there, but the Manila massacre saw between 100,000-500,000 deaths in total, giving it a foundation for paranormal activity. The dungeons of the fort saw around 600 American prisoner of war soldiers died of suffocation and hunger after being held in such as small enclosed area.
With such a violent history and an enormous amount of deaths caused by inhumane acts, is it any wonder Fort Santiago is considered the most haunted place in the Philippines?
Visitors have reported voices and screams of pain which may be due to the many people who were tortured to death there. Others have even reported being touched by unseen forces and there have been many visitors reporting see apparitions.
If you walk the route of José Rizal on the way to his execution, which is outlined at Fort Santiago by metal footprints designed on the floor, you can sometimes here footsteps of his ghost walking the path over and over again.
Fort Santiago stands as the most haunted place in the Philippines and is open for the public to visit.
