Known as Pete the Poltergeist or the Cardiff Poltergeist, this is a case that gained a lot of media attention in the early 90s, but has slipped into the forgotten archives.
Pat and John Matthews were the owners of a lawn and grass cutting equipment company called Mower Services with their store down an ally, just off a main road in Cardiff.
Whilst John and his team were working, they heard what sounded like stones rolling down the metal sheet roof. Assuming it was local kids trying to annoy them, they went outside, but the ally was empty.
After this continued to happen, the action then moved inside the workshop. Small things started to inexplicably fly across the room including small stones and bolts. There was also a spot in the corner that became extremely cold with a strong burning smell.
Not convinced it wasn’t one of the staff just playing around on his fellow colleagues, John instructed his staff to put their hands face down on a table with him. After a moment, a stone was thrown across the room at his request, then a spark plug. This confirmed to them all that there was some kind of supernatural presence there with them.
No feeling like they were in any danger and knowing there was not much they could do about it, they accepted the supernatural spirit and even named him… “Pete the Polt”, short for Pete the Poltergeist.
John and Pam called in paranormal research and university professor David Fontana who showed up unannounced to try and catch them in the act of a hoax, but as he walked in, a stone flew in front of him and hit a piece of machinery.
Upon his reports, it turned into a media frenzy, and despite the Matthews not wanting to publicize it so customers weren’t scared off, the attention actually grew their business with people wanting to meet Pete the Poltergeist.
With so many eye-witness accounts due to the influx of customers, this became one of the biggest poltergeist cases of its time.
There was one occasion when Pete was spotted. John and one of his staff spotted a small boy sat on one of the workshop shelves, but disappeared shortly afterwards.
When Mower Services outgrew its current workshop, the Matthews moved to a larger industrial space, leaving Pete the Poltergeist to haunt the next victim.
