Meet the only immortal creature on planet earth, the Turritopsis dohrnii. Also known as the immortal jellyfish, this creature has the incredible ability to convert its cells when its injured or dying and turn them back into young cells and start fresh.
First discovered in the 1800s, deep in the Mediterranean Sea, the Turritopsis dohrnii is a unique organism that can use its abilities to cheat death by reverting back to its juvenile state.
When the immortal jellyfish reproduce, they transform themselves back into polyp state. The bodies shrink, their tentacle retract and they sink back to the ocean bed and the life cycle starts all over again.
Though they can still die from an attack from a predator, disease or their food source becoming scarce, they would live forever in a perfect habitat, earning them their name and giving them immortality, apart for those exceptions.
If the Turritopsis dohrnii becomes physically harmed or begins to suffer from starvation, it can transform at will, back into polyp state and produce new genetically identical jellyfish.
There is still much to be learned about this unique creature, from its ability to transform cells to genetic research, but Biologist have posted their current understanding of its life cycle which you can see here:
