South Africa’s Haunted Castle of Good Hope
Haunted castles are scattered throughout the world, such as Chillingham Castle in England and Glamis Castle in Scotland, but one of the scariest and most haunted places in Cape Town is the ‘Castle of Good Hope’.
The Castle of Good Hope or Cape Town Castle is a bastion fort built in 1667 in Cape Town, the oldest city in South Africa, which is home to many tourist attractions. This astonishing building initially served the purpose of a replenishment station for ships passing the treacherous coast around the Cape on long voyages between the Netherlands and Indonesia.
This former Dutch East India Company has been many things to different people, a place of pleasure and pain. For those who first settled in there, it was a relaxation station for ship personnel, but to the residents of the community, it was a nightmare; it logically has the most ghosts in South Africa.
The fortress housed a church, bakery, different workshops, living quarters, and cells, amongst others. In 1936, the Castle of Good Hope was officially declared an historical monument, the first site in South Africa to be so protected by walls, in case of an attack.
A romantic ghost was reported to have haunted the castle; her curly-headed ghost has been known to appear at parties in the castle to honor distinguished guests. She was believed to be Lady Anne Barnard, who had lived in the castle for five years in the 1700s.
In 1915, an unidentified figure was reported to have wandered in the building, it was observed to have jumped over the high walls, and many claimed it was a ghost. This strange visitor haunts the castle and vanishes at the last instant.
More frequently, unexplainable footsteps have been heard in the same area of the castle, which was believed to be the same ghost who rings the castle bell from time to time, a horrifying fact of a guard who committed suicide a century ago by hanging himself with the bell rope.
Some tourists also reported seeing a wild black dog that attacks visitors but mysteriously disappears into the thin air. Voices of people arguing and shuffling were also heard from an underground chamber that was used for torturing, while lights went off in the dungeon without cause.
The castle of good hope is a place full of many fairy tales and fascinating experiences which will make a good adventure for intending visitors. Today, the Castle of Good Hope is a museum which houses the William Fehr collection of Africana. However, much of the stories about a ghostly black hound who parades the castle are still an unexplained mystery.
