In the late hours of November 2nd, 1957, and the early hours of November 3rd, an unidentified object was reported, both in the sky and in the roads around the small town of Levelland, Texas, USA, earning it the name ”the Levelland UFO”.
The first report came in the evening from two farm workers, who called the Levelland police department and explained the event they’d just witnessed to the officer, who was working the night shift on the desk. Police officer A. J. Fowler quickly dismissed the report because he thought it was a prank.
An hour later, another report came in with a similar description. Then another. Then another. Then about twelve more reports in the space of a few hours. Here are a few of the eye-witnesses and what they saw;
Pedro Saucedo and Joe Salaz
The two farm workers had been driving four miles west of Levelland when they noticed a flash of blue light near the road. They both claimed that the engine of their truck died and they saw a rocket-shaped object that rose up (suggestively from the road ahead) and approached their truck from above. Saucedo claimed:
“I jumped out of the truck and hit the dirt because I was afraid. I called to Joe, but he didn’t get out. The thing passed directly over my truck with great sounds and a rush of wind. It sounded like thunder and my truck rocked from the flash… I felt a lot of heat.”
As the unidentified flying object moved away from Pedro and Joe, the engine to the truck started and seemed to work without any issues.
About an hour after the call from Saucedo, another came in from a motorist named Jim Wheeler, who reported a ”brilliantly lit, egg- shaped object, about 200 feet long” that was sitting ahead of him in the road, blocking his path. This time the report came from four miles east of Levelland. He also claimed that his vehicle had died when coming closer to the object. He got out of his car, but as soon as he did, the object took off and its lights went off. Once again, the object moving away seemed to stop the car from malfunctioning. It restarted and worked normally.
The Married Couple
At 10:55pm, another call came in from a couple who were driving northeast of Levelland. They reported a bright flash of light moving across the sky when their headlights and radio died for a few seconds.
At 11:00pm, a fourth call came into the police station from Jose Alvarez, who claimed a similar event to the first two calls. He was driving 11 miles north of Levelland when he was obstructed by a strange object sitting in the road ahead of him. His vehicle’s engine died, but when the object took off, it seems his vehicle started to work fine.
At 12:05am on the morning of November 3rd, just over an hour since the last call, Newell Wright, a student from the Texas Technological College, reported driving 10 miles east of Levelland when his car engine began to sputter. The meter on the dash jumped to discharge and then went back to normal. The motor started to cut out, as if the vehicle had run out of gas, but it hadn’t. He reported that the car rolled to a stop, then the headlights dimmed and totally went out a few seconds later. Upon exiting his vehicle to try and see what the problem was, he saw a 100 foot long egg-shaped object sitting in the road ahead of him. The object took off and his car started working again.
At 12:15, just ten minutes after Wright’s call, a farmer reported seeing an unusual object sitting in the road ahead of him. He described it as brightly glowing that seemed to cause his lights to go out and motor to stop as he approached it. Once again, the object flew away and his vehicle started to work normally, as well as his lights coming back on.
At 12:45am, Ronald Martin called the police to alert them to a brightly lit object sitting in the road in front of him. He also claimed to have headlight and engine problems until the object flew away and his vehicle went back to normal.
At 1:15am, James Long reported another identical incident where his car malfunctioned, spotting an object in the road ahead, then it took off and his vehicle was fine.
By the time Martin and Long’s calls came in, there were already several Levelland police officers searching the surrounding areas to investigate what was going on. Among the officers was Sheriff Weir Clem, who, at 1:30am, reported seeing a ”brilliant red object moving across the sky”.
Fifteen minutes later, at 1:45am, Levelland’s fire chief, Ray Jones, also saw the object at the exact same time his vehicle had the same issue as the other reports had claimed, with dimming headlights and the engine sputtering or failing.
The reports ended soon after that, totaling fifteen calls into the police department about the same unidentified object.
There was never any conclusion as to what it was, who it belonged to or why it caused vehicles and other electrical components on the vehicles to temporarily fail. It could have been an encounter with an extra-terrestrial craft, but it could just as easily be explained by something else.
It’s hard to comprehend this being anything other than extra-terrestrials, but let us know what you think in the comments below.
