A black hole is a ghost region in space with a gravitational pull that even light, which travels 186,000 miles a second, can’t escape from. Believe it or not that’s the only facts we humans know about black holes, though we can go into much more detail in describing a black hole.
The true nature of them, as well as the ”singularity” at the center is a complete mystery and is where our understanding of physics ends.
Black holes are big. Like, very big. Like big enough to suck up asteroids, planets, stars, and even galaxies.
Imagine the earth’s core having the strongest gravitational pull as everything seems to be pulled towards it (the center of the earth has zero gravity, but for ease of explanation, we’ll just imagine the center of the earth has the strongest gravitational pull).
If you throw a ball into the air, gravity will bring it back towards the earth’s center, but with the ground in the way, it stops there and just sits on the floor.
If you increase the earth’s central gravity, then our planet would start to get sucked into it. Increase it even more and our planet would be totally sucked into the central point. Now, increase it even more so the gravity pulls the orbiting satellites in, then the moon, then Venus, then Mars. You get the idea.
That’s the basic concept of a black hole.
Black holes have a gravitational pull that reaches much further though. It sucks in anything and everything that comes close to it. Even stars get sucked into the center and the light from stars can’t even escape.
Everything gets sucked into a black hole until it reaches the mysterious center point. This is the point where our understanding of physics ends and theory and imagination kicks in. We describe it as a singularity where all mass is condensed down to an unexplained infinite point.
